Sign Designer & Co-Builder

Bucks Edible Woodland is a volunteer lead organisation who manage a plot of land in Buckingham, growing edible plants for the community and general public.

This sign was developed to welcome people into the space with the words written by members of the Edible Woodland to explain what the project was about and what people may find within the area.

The Design, Paint & Build Process

The Old Sign

It was certainly time for a new sign!
A sign which had to withstand the wind and rain throughout all seasons and be up for the wear, tear and use from the general public.
It had to be informative, engaging and beautiful.
Proposal for Overal Design

Three proposals were sent to the community group. Together they chose a design and stated what elements they would like to include.
The Proposal Made Digital

After hearing the feedback the chosen proposal was digitalised, sent back again for review then sent to a local trusted printers.
Painting Onto The Sign

Members of the Edible Woodland wanted to see elements from the old sign depicted, so the old illustration was copied and painted onto the new sign alongside some more botantical-like illustrations.
Building The Sign

Whilst the paint dries, building work begun. The sign was made using fence posts with a marine plywood backing.
Staining & Treating The Wood

This stage visually brings the whole sign together and ensures the wood will last many years in the elements.
Ready For The Artwork

Assembling all the pieces of wood into what is now begining to look like a sturdy noticeboard.
Sealing the Design into the Sign

The artwork was laid on top of the marine plywood with safety glass placed on top. These layers were then sealed using aluminium tape to prevent moisture getting in.
Installing The Sign

Inserting metposts with a bespoke jig into the holes was a big moment. Placement of the sign was considered carefully before installing.
Success!

The sign now stands strong and proud, welcoming and informing all passing by.
